Bishop of Charleston, 1820-1842

Arms of John England

Official blazon

Argent, six bars gules, over-all a cross botonny vert.

Origin/meaning

The thirteen bars of red and silver represent the Thirteen Original States of America; the cross over the bars represents the Catholic Faith which was brought to Charleston by Bishop England. The green color of the Cross is probably in remembrance of Ireland, his native country.
