PENRITH (urban district council)

Incorporated into : 1974 Eden

Arms (crest) of Penrith

Official blazon

Arms : Per chevron Azure and Gules issuant from the point of the chevron Rays of the Sun between two Sheaves of Corn Or and in base a triple towered Castle Gold.
Crest : On a Wreath of the Colours a Saltire Argent fimbriated Azure enfiled by an Ancient Crown Or.
Motto : 'FIDE ET FORTITUDINE' - By faith and fortitude

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on February 28, 1952.

The blue and red division of the shield represents a red hill against the blue sky. Penrith's name means "red hill". The town's beacon is shown by the rays of light issuing from the top of the chevron. The two garbs or sheaves of corn are symbolic of agriculture. The castle refers to the area's fortifications and history in general.

The crest consists of an ancient crown for the charter granted in 1223 and St. Andrew's cross for the town's patron saint.
