Motto: In Nomine Jesu.

Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal arms of the Bishop are based on the arms of the Ireton family of England, which bore: Argent, two bends gules. The cross inverted has been added as the symbol of Saint Peter, Prince of the Apostles, who was crucified on an inverted cross, the Bishop's baptismal patron.

The motto is the first words of the Introit for the feast of the Holy Name of Jesus, taken from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Philippians, chapter 2, verse l0: In nomine Jesu omne genu fl.ectatur, coelestium, terrestrium et infernorum, which is translated: "So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend of those'in heaven, on earth and under the earth." It recalls the many years the Prelate was the Director of the Holy Name Society in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
