Official blazon

  • (de) Geviert: Feld 1: in Gold ein schwarzer, golden gekrönter, rot bewehrter Adler mit einem silbernen Mühleisen auf jedem Flügel; Feld 2: in Blau ein siebenmal von Rot über Silber geteilter, golden bewehrter und gekrönter Löwe; Feld 3: in Rot ein silbernes sechsspeiehiges Rad; Feld 4: ein rotes zwölfendiges Geweih mit Grind.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on January 22, 1996.

The arms combine elements from the arms of the territories to which the district historically belonged : the eagle of the city of Mühlhausen, the lion of the Dukes of Thüringen in the second quarter, in the third quarter the wheel of the State of Mainz and in the fourth quarter the arms of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen.
