Bishop of Augsburg, 1992-2004

Arms (crest) of Viktor Josef Dammertz

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The first quarter in the upper right half shows the divided shield of the Diocese of Augsburg. The lower right half shows a candelabra, taken from the arms of the Congergation of St. Otillien, to which he belonged. The cross is taken from the arms of the St. Odilien Abbey. The bend symbolises the 'road' mentioned in his former motto 'Iter para tutum' (Prepare a safe way). The star is the symbol of St. Mary.
