German heraldry:

Selected collector's items from Germany:

WITTLICH (WIL)

State : Rheinland-Pfalz
Incorporated into : 1969 Bernkastel-Wittlich

Wittlich.kreis.jpg

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on December 5, 1949.

The arms are a combination of four territories to which parts of the district historically belonged. About half of the municipalities in the district belonged to the State of Trier, hence the cross of Trier in the first quarter.
A third of the municipalities belonged to Luxembourg, the arms of Luxembourg are thus shown in the third quarter.
The second quarter shows the arms of the Counts of Sponheim, who held the area around the city of Kröv.
The fourth quarter shows the arms of the County Manderscheid in the Eiffel mountains, part of which is in the district.
