405TH COMBAT SUPPORT HOSPITAL, US ARMY

A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height, consisting of a disc divided diagonally from upper left to lower right silver over maroon, in the upper right a maroon winged annulet surrounding a maroon Greek cross; in lower left the upper half of a gear in silver. Attached below the disc a silver scroll inscribed “VINCULUM VITAE” in maroon letters. The motto is translated as “The Bond of Life.”
Origin/meaning
Maroon and white are the colors traditionally associated with the Medical Corps. The mission of the unit is symbolized by the winged maroon cross, the universally recognized symbol of medicine. The spur gear is representative of the cooperation and dedication by the personnel of the Hospital.
The Distinctive Unit Insignia was originally approved for the 39th Evacuation Hospital (Motorized) on 14 January 1943. It was rescinded on 20 October 1961. The insignia was reinstated effective 18 September 1992, with description and symbolism revised for the 405th Combat Support Hospital.
