Origin/meaning

The seal was adopted in 2006.

Formed on Dec. 29, 1866 from a part of Lake County, Saguache County, in south central Colorado, is bordered by the San Juan mountains to the west and the Sangre de Cristo Range to the east, which serves as the backdrop to the county’s seal.

The name Saguache (pronounced Sa-watch) is a Ute word for “water at the blue Earth.”

Beneath the mountains, fertile soil represents the county’s agriculture areas, which primarily grow alfalfa, barley, wheat, hay and potatoes.

The rancher and cattle represent the livestock raised in the county, which also includes, sheep and pigs.

The moose on the opposite rock is a sampling of the wildlife that live in the county.
