Argent, a lion passant guardant Gules, crowned with an antique crown Or; on a chief wavy Azure three fish fretted Proper be tween two garbs ofthe Third banded Vert.
Above the Shield is placed a coronet appropriate to a statutory District, videlicet:- a circlet richly chased, from which are issuant eight thistle-heads (three and two halves visible) Or.
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on October 1, 1975.
The arms show in the base the lion of the Ogilvy clan, with a crown taken from the arms of the clan Gordon, these two clans were the most important in the history of the rebion. This lion already appeared partly in the arms of the older Banffshire County Council. The chief represents Buchan and the blue colour and wavy division line symbolise the sea. The garbs are taken from the arms of the old Earldom of Buchan, the fish symbolise the fishing industry, especially in Fraserburgh and Peterhead. Heraldic Bibliography:
