Origin/meaning

In the early 14th century Heinrich II, Bishop of Hildesheim decided to built a fortified house or small castle south of Hildesheim on the Innerste river. The name of the stronghold became Marienburg, or castle of Mary, the patron saint of Hildesheim.
The city later developed around the castle and hence the use of the castle in the arms.
