(personal side) Per fess Argent and Gules, in chief a cross of St Michael the Archangel Gules (a cross pomme) and in base a stag Argent attired and unguled.

As common in Australian episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The arms are canting; the cross of St. Michael in the upper half, and the arms of the McCarthy clan in base as a reference to his last name.

The motto “Gloriari in Cruce” (Boast in the Cross) is from St Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians 6:14.
