Origin/meaning
The arms were officially adopted in 1998.
Thearms directly refers to the national arms, because the city is the cradle of Polish democracy - until 1567 general noble conventions were held there. After the union with Lithuania, these parliaments were moved to Warsaw.
Prior to 1998 the city used different arms, showing a city wapp, the eagle and a letter P, see below.
