Origin/meaning
Otterberg received city rights in 1581 and the oldest seals date from the same time. All seals showed a shield with three squirrels. The squirrels are derived from the arms of the Cistercian monastery of Otterberg. The meaning of the squirrels is not known.
The arms were officially granted in 1842 with a helmet and crest. The crest showing a squirrel between buffalo horns. In 1890 the arms were confirmed.
