MERSEBURG (MER)
State : Sachsen-Anhalt
Incorporated into : 1994 Merseburg-Querfurt (2007 Saalekreis)
German | blazon wanted |
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on July 31, 1937.
The arms are a combination of the eagle of Sachsen and the cross of the diocese of Merseburg. The diocese of Merseburg was founded in 968, dissolved in 981 when Giselher of Merseburg became Archbishop of Magdeburg, but reinstated in 1004. The area was always under influence of Saxony, but became no part if Saxony until the late 16th century.
