According to a legend an English king when dying ceded to his son the royal crown and all movables to his daughter. The heir to the throne wished to deprive his sister of the treasures by getting her married in a foreign land. However, as he was persuaded by his advisers, he decided to feed a bear with her. The girl did not only tame the animal but even rode on it out of the palace. The king apologised and got his sister married to the duke of Lorraine. In order to celebrate that event the princess granted her descendants a coat of arms with a virgin who rides on a bear.
