Origin/meaning
The Lion and the Sword symbolises the Army and the Book stands for the educational role of the Academy. The Shield is Gules the Lion and Book Or and the Sword Argent with hilt and pommel Or. Mantling Gules doubled Or. The Crest has the same tinctures as in the Shield. Round the Shield is the Order of the Tower and Sword the highest Order of Portugal. Which can be awared Institutions as well as Individuals. The Motto translates as "It is sweet and proper to die for the fatherland" is taken from Horace's Odes.
