Origin/meaning
Bergen was the seat of the local court and had a city-like character in the 17th century, but it never officially received city rights. The oldest seal of the town dates from the late 15th century and already shows the lion. The seal was used until the 18th century. The later seals also only showed the lion
The lion itself is derived from the arms of the counts of Lüneburg, as the area belonged to Lüneburg since the early 13th century.
Seal from around 1900 |
The arms by Hupp in the Kaffee Hag albums +/- 1925 |
