The right part shows the arms of Bayern as a symbol for the fact that the disctrict is one of the oldest areas in Bayern. It became part of Bayern in the 13<sup>th</sup> century. The staffs in the left part are taken from the arms of the abbey of Benediktbeuern in the district. The abbey owned the whole western part of the district.
