The town belonged to the State of Passau until 1803. According to legend the wolf, taken from the arms of the State of Passau, was granted in the 14<sup>th</sup> century, but this has been proven to be not true. The oldest use of the wolf dates from 1812, and showed the wolf facing left. In the late 19<sup>th</sup> century this was changed to the present arms, in which the wolf faces right, as in the arms of the State of Passau.
