The origin of the arms is not known, the arms were applied for in the early 19<sup>th</sup> century by the local council, but the meaning is no longer known. During the 18<sup>th</sup> century the council used as arms a golden shield with a red chevron, which is based on the arms of [[Herzele]], as the local Lord of Eksaarde was the son of Claire van Herzele.
