Origin/meaning

Uusimaa is a historical province, already mentioned in the 14th century. It was a province of Finland from 1831-1997 when it became part of Etelä-Suomi province. This province was abolished in 2010 and split again in Uusimaa, Kymenlaakso and Itä-Uusimaa. The latter was again merged with Uusimaa in 2011.

The arms were probably granted around 1600. They were used by the new province from the 19th century onwards.

The arms were officially granted on January 18, 1962 and abolished in 1997. The arms were restored in 2009 and not granted again.
