Origin/meaning
The Lion and the Sword symbolises the Army and the Book stands for the educational role of the Academy. Surrounding the Shield is the Order of the Tower and Sword the highest Order of Portugal. Which can be awared Institutions as well as Individuals. The Motto translates as "It is sweet and proper to die for the fatherland" is taken from Horace's Odes.
