Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on May 13, 2025.

The lion of St. Mark, the cross of Santiago and the wheatears have been taken from the arms of the former parishes. St. Mark is the patron saint of the parish church of Pereiro.

The green field is a reference to agriculture and nature, as well as the existence of a rich fauna and wild flora, which constitute the greatest wealth of its territory, whose landscape is characterized by olive trees, almond trees, fig trees, rosemary trees and blueberries. The wheatears also refer to agriculture.

The crenellated division line symbolises the Old Castle, which constitutes a defensive structure of the Islamic period, and the old walls of the 17th century, which surrounded the whole town. The silver is a reference to the "Pazes de Alcoutim", a treaty celebrated in 1371 at Alcoutim castle, between kings D. Fernando I of Portugal and D Henry II of Castile.

The Cross of Santiago represents the Order of Santiago, to whom King D. Dinis donated, in 1302, the standard of all churches to be built in Alcoutim and on its term, also ordaining its population.

The base symbolises the Guadiana River, which served, and serves, as a means of transport of people and products between Alcoutim and Sanlúcar. The Guadiana borders to the East the parish and the council, serving as a natural border with Spain.
