Origin/meaning

Walbeck was a possession of the Counts of Nydeggen until 1359 when it was sold to Geldern.

The oldest seal of Waldeck dates from 1468 and shows a divided shield, with in the upper part the lion of Gelre and in the lower part the letter W. Both later seals, from the 16th and 18^th century, show the same arms.
