Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on January 31, 1927.

The two glasses symbolise the glass factories in the city, during the DDR times the largest in the country. The miner's tools indicate the mining near the city. The blue and yellow are the colours of the Oberlausitz region. The base is a canting element, Weisswasser meaning white-water.

The arms were designed in 1927, but with an unclear image of the two glasses. The local typical glass is green, so it is assumed that the original coloour was green. However, that is agains the heraldic rule of tincture, so the glasses were often shown as silver. On the image of Hupp, see below, the glasses are basically silver with a green shadow. During the DDR times the glasses were shown in silver, nowadays the ciuty uses green glasses.
