701ST AIRLIFT SQUADRON, US AIR FORCE

History: Constituted as 701 Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) on 20 March 1943. Activated on 1 April 1943. Redesignated as 701 Bombardment Squadron, Heavy on 20 August 1943. Inactivated on 12 September 1945. Redesignated as 701 Bombardment Squadron, Very Heavy on 13 May 1947. Activated in the Reserve on 12 July 1947. Inactivated on 27 June 1949. Redesignated as 701 Fighter-Bomber Squadron on 24 June 1952. Activated in the Reserve on 8 July 1952. Inactivated on 1 July 1957. Redesignated as 701 Troop Carrier Squadron, Medium on 24 October 1957. Activated in the Reserve on 16 November 1957. Redesignated as 701 Troop Carrier Squadron, Assault on 25 September 1958. Ordered to active service on 28 October 1962. Relieved from active duty on 28 November 1962. Discontinued, and inactivated, on 15 December 1965. Redesignated as 701 Military Airlift Squadron (Associate) on 16 September 1970. Activated in the Reserve on 25 September 1970. Redesignated as: 701 Airlift Squadron (Associate) on 1 February 1992; 701 Airlift Squadron on 1 October 1994. Trained B-24 bomber crews in US, April-October 1943. Between 13 December 1943 and 25 April 1945, flew bombing missions from England against targets in Germany and German-occupied Europe. From 1952-1957, trained for fighter-bomber operations. Conducted flying training for airlift missions, 1957-1965. Recalled to active duty during Cuban missile crisis, October-November 1962, during which the squadron airlifted US Army troops and equipment to various parts of the nation. Augmented an active duty strategic airlift wing by flying that wing's aircraft on contingency and channel missions and on training exercises, 1970-. From 1992, involved in various humanitarian missions including missions to Washington DC and New York City in aftermath of attack on US by terrorists on 11 September 2001. Airlifted NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft from Buckley AFB, CO to Cape Canaveral, FL for its launch to orbit Mars, 4 January 2001. Supported Hurricane Katrina (September 2005) and Hurricane Ike (September 2008) relief missions.
