926TH FIGHTER WING, US AIR FORCE

History: Established as 926 Troop Carrier Group, Medium, and activated, on 28 Dec 1962. Organized in the Reserve on 17 Jan 1963. Redesignated as: 926 Tactical Airlift Group on 1 Jul 1967; 926 Tactical Fighter Group on 1 Apr 1978; 926 Fighter Group on 1 Feb 1992; 926 Fighter Wing on 1 Oct 1994; 926 Group on 17 Aug 2007; 926 Wing on 5 Dec 2014-.

Airlifted troops and cargo worldwide, 1963-1978, including airlift to Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War and numerous humanitarian airlift operations. Trained in A-37 and A-10 offensive and defensive capabilities, including close air support, 1978-1992. Deployed with A-10s to Saudia Arabia, 1 Jan-17 May 1991. Executed battlefield interdiction and close air support during the Persian Gulf War, Jan-Feb 1991; group pilot is credited with the first A-10 air-to-air kill on 6 Feb 1991. Transitioned to F-16 fighters in 1992. Deployed to Italy and participated in UN operations to enforce the no-fly zone over Bosnia, Mar-Apr 1995. Converted from fighter to attack aircraft in 1996. Elements deployed to Afghanistan in 2002 and again in 2004 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. After Hurricane Katrina devastated the group’s base in the New Orleans area in late 2005, the wing’s aircraft were sent to other bases. Moved to Nevada in 2007, where it flew aircraft of the United States Air Force Weapons Center. Among those aircraft F-15s, F-16s, F-22s, and F-35s.
