Origin/meaning

Founded as the Diocese of Ermland in 1243. The last German Bishop Maximilian Kaller was expelled in 1945. Then named Bishop of Expellees by the Pope. The Vatican considered the Diocese vacant after Keller's death in 1947. Reestablished as the Polish Diocese of Warmia in 1972, it was raised to a Archdiocese in 1992.
