LEOBEN
State : Steiermark
District : Leoben
Origin/meaning
Leoben is to this day the most important Styrian mining town, seat of a renowned Montanuniversität (an university specialized in mining, metallurgy, oil-drilling and related sciences).
According to medieval science, the ostrich ate and digested iron which it needed to survive. The ostrich thus was an appropriate symbol for the city. The arms have been used since the late 13th century.
