Origin/meaning

The arms show a sword and a key and are based on the arms of the old Diocese of Naumburg. The arms of the city were mirrored from the arms of the diocese. From the 1390s until 1994 the key was placed over the sword, since 1994 this is reversed, based on the historical seals as well as the diocesan arms.

The arms already appear on 16th century seals of the city.
