NO 485 SQUADRON, RNZAF

History: The Squadron was formed at RAF Station Driffield, Yorkshire in March 1941.

Motto: Ka whawhai tonu = We will fight on.

Origin/meaning

The ancient Maori Warrior had a reputation second to noe as a courageous and often gallant fighter. The Motto is the reply of a starving and besieged Maori Tribe when called upon to surrender. The two taken thogehter symbolises the Sprit of the Wing (originally Squadron. The badge was approved in January 1944, in April 1967 is was approved for the Strike Wing, RNZAF
