STRIKE WING, RNZAF

A Maori warroir holding a Taiaha (or Spear).
Motto: Ka whawhai tonu = We will fight on.

Origin/meaning

The ancient Maori Warroir had a reputation second to noe as a courageous and often gallant fighter. The Motto is the reply of a starving a besieged Maori Tribe when called upon to surrender. The two taken thogehter symbolises the Sprit of the Wing (originally Squadron). The badge was originally approved of the No 485 (NZ) Squadronm which was formed at RAF Station Driffield, Yorkshire in March 1941. In April 1967 it was approved for the Strike Wing.
