Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on March 22, 1949.

The school was founded in 1513 by Dame Agnes Mellers, Sir Thomas Lovell and King Henry VIII. The arms incorporate those of the founders: the arms of the Mellers family were three blackbirds (or merles) on a white field. The crowns are taken from the arms of the city of Nottingham (and also refer to Henry VIII) and the open book is a symbol of learning. The crest is taken from the arms of Thomas Lovell.

The motto is Latin for "Praise to the end".

In practice the school uses a different shield since 2007 as a logo, which is not officially granted:
