The arms were officially adopted on December 30, 2002.
The arms have been used for several centuries. They are a classic example of the coats of arms granted by Gniezno archbishops to the cities located in their estates. The three fleur-de-lys are taken from the arms of the Archdiocese of Gniezno, the cross is a clear Christian symbol.
