SECKAU

State : Steiermark
District : Murtal (until 2015 Knittelfeld)

Wappen von Seckau

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The borough of Seckau uses the old arms of the monastery of Seckau, but there is no formal grant on record.

Until about 1783, Seckau was a monastery of Canons Regular. The monastery was founded about 1140 by Adalram von Waldeck, one of the Hochfreien of Styria (Hochfreier = a high nobleman in the Middle Ages, often a rival of the Margrave, later the Duke of Styria). Adalram made "his" monastery the owner of the surrounding lands, including the parts where a market borough was to grow in later years.
