Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on June 26, 1978.

These arms show the patron saint, St. John Evangelist, as shown in the Arnsberg Roll of Arms, dating from the 16th century. The municipality also used this composition as unofficial arms from the 19th century until 1956, see below.

The previous were granted on January 10, 1956.

Wappen von Sundern

The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, known from 1530. The arms also show St. John Evangelist, now holding a shield with a crescent, his symbol. The colours are the colours of the County Arnsberg, to which the city historically belonged.

Before 1956 the city used arms with the saint, but these were not officially granted.
