Official blazon
Dutch	(1818) Van zilver beladen met een gouden dwarsbalk en van boven verzeld van vier blaauwe klokjes staande in den zin van den dwarsbalk en van onderen van vijf diergelijke klokjes staande 1 en 2, het schild gedekt met een gouden kroon. (1838) Wit koleur met eene gouden byl waerby negen stukken wit en blaeuw houtwerk, gerangschikt vier aen de bovenzyde en vyf aen de onderzyde 3 en 2 het wapen gedekt met eene gouden kroon waerop eene jonggeboorene zwaen, draegende eenen halsband met eene gouden kroon. (1990) In zilver een verhoogde dwarsbalk van goud, getopt met vier aaneengesloten vairklokjes en vergezeld beneden van vijf aaneengesloten en aanstotende vairklokjes, geplaatst 3 en 2. Het schild getopt met een kroon met drie fleurons gescheiden door drie parels waarvan een verheven van goud, waarin een zwaan van natuurlijke kleur met een kroon van goud om de hals.

The arms were granted on October 20, 1818 and again with supporter on May 25, 1838 and December 18, 1990.

The arms from 1818

Tongeren is the oldest city in Belgium, already an important town in Roman times. The oldest seal of the city of Tongeren dates from the 13^th century and shows a fortified city. Later the seals showed a shield with (variations) of the arms of the Van Elderen family. In the 15^th century the Van Elderen family acted as vassals of the Bishops of Liège, to which the city belonged.

In 1496 the arms of Arnold van Elderen were described as a shield of vair, with a bar. Later images changed the components to the above arms, in which the vair has been replaced by 9 pieces of vair and the bar reduced to a smaller bar placed in the upper half of the shield.
