Origin/meaning

The oldest known seal of Velvary dates from the early half of the 15th century and shows already a lion, holding two towers in its paws. Later seals all show the same composition.

The oldest coloured image was created by Velvary school principal Pavel Raphigiues Litomyslsky in 1607, in the Municipal Book "Liber Memorabilium et Contractum" (see below).

The lion is the lion of Bohemia, the towers are a symbol of a city. It has been speculated that the city originally used the double-headed Imperial Eagle, but there is no proof that the city actually did so.
