Origin/meaning

The arms with the ladder first appear in a banner from 1705. The ladder is probably derived from a bend, which was placed over the arms of the Hildesheim Abbey, to which the town belonged. The use of a bend over the Hildesheim arms is known 15^th century secret seals. The main seals show the H. Madonna with child, the patron saint of Hildesheim, and St. Matthew, the local saint.

In the 19^th century the ladder was silver and placed on a shield divided per bend from gold and green. In 1940 the present arms were officially granted.
