Origin/meaning

The arms are not officially granted and were adopted in 1861.

In the town meeting of on 21 June 1860 the need for a seal was discussed for the first time. On September 20, 1861 a design for a coat of arms to be used on the seal was proposed to the town council. It showed the above design, but with an additional kangaroo crest bearing symbols of England, Ireland and Scotland, and with the crown in the centre of the shield. The local council approved the design, but moved the crown to above the shield and removed the crest. The arms were then approved on November 27, 1861.

The cross is the St. George's cross for the British origin of the settlers, with the stars of the Southern Cross for Australia.

The first quarter shows a golden fleece to represent the pastoral interests of the district. The second indicates mining with a pick, shovel, and coal basket. The third shows the town (in the distance) with factory chimneys for industry and agriculture in the foreground. The fourth shows a steam-boat, denoting commerce and the municipality being at the head of navigation.

The crown denotes the British Monarch and is placed on symbols for Ireland (shamrock), England (rose) and Scotland (thistle). The shield is surrounded with branches of cotton tree, the vine, and Indian corn, indicating the climate and sources of wealth for the town.

The motto is 'Confide Recte Agens' which means 'Be confident in doing right'
