Administrative division
The islands are a British Overseas Territory which have no permanent population, only some scientists and administrators. The territory was created in 1985 when the Falkland Islands Dependencies were abolished.
The National Arms of the South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
The arms were officially granted on February, 14, 1985.
The two stars are taken from the coat of arms of James Cook. The lion is the British lion, who holds the torch taken from the arms of the Falkland Islands Dependencies. The supporters are a fur seal and a Macaroni penguin, common local animals. The crest is a reindeer, from the two herds of reindeer found on South Georgia Island. The seal stands on a mountain, while the penguin stands on ice.
The motto is Leo Terram Propriam Protegat (Latin: “[Let the] Lion protect his own land”).
