As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal arms of the Bishop are based upon those of the Ryan family of County Tipperary, Ireland. The "plate" inscribed with the sacred monogram IHS, is an allusion to the Bishop's former parish, the Church of the Holy Name, in West Roxbury. The chief bears a variant of the traditional arms of Saint Edward, King and Confessor, the name saint of Bishop Ryan.
