The Nilan coat is an assumption, indicating the Prelate's devotion to St. Joseph, the Patron of his seminary, as a student; of his parish as priest; and of his cathedral as bishop. The shamrock is the symbol of Ireland (his fatherland) as well as of the Blessed Trinity
