The wavy division line illustrates the location of the municipality on the Baltic Sea. The ox head is taken from the arms of the [[Wagrien]] landscape. It also refers to the importance of cattle breeding in the municipality. The wheatears further indicate the importance of agriculture. The lakes and rivers in the region have a natural abundance of fish. About 200 years ago a perch appeared on the Schönberg church tower as a weather vane, which is shown in the lower half.
 
The shield colors silver and blue have always been the colors of the medieval provostry to which the village belonged. The figure colors red and gold in connection with the shield colors result in the four colors of the state coat of arms.
