The scallop shell of the medieval times was the universal implement of the traveler of pilgrim, serving as spoon, knife and plate and symbol of St. James the Elder, patron saint of Bishop Sullivan. A scallop shell is also part of the arms of a Sullivan family of Ireland, and thus used here to represent the name of the bishop. | |||
