The arms show quartered the arms of the Archdiocese in I and IV and the arms of the Archbishop in II and III.
When as auxiliary bishop he used the Tau-cross and stars taken from the logo of the Collegium Augustinianum Gaesdonck school which he attended. The lower half shows the arms of the city of [[Kleve]], where he was born.


In the personal arms the axe is the symbol of St. Matthew, from which the family name Thissen is derived. The swan is the symbol of the city of Kleve, where the Archbishop was born. The Tau-cross and black balls are taken from the logo of the Collegium Augustinianum Gaesdonck school which he attended.
