Säckingen was founded around 1250 and the oldest seal dates from the same time. The seal showed the local patron saint, St. Fridolin as a pilgrim. This composition remained in use until the late 16<sup>th</sup> century. Until around 1800 the seals show part of the saint, and in the base a canting bag (Säckel). After 1806, when the city became part of Baden, the bag alone was used in the arms. The colours changed widely during the centuries.
