The arms are supposedly granted by Duke Bogislaw XIII of Pommerania in 1587, when he founded the city. The arms show a castle with the griffin of [[Pommerania]] in the gate. The new city was named after his father in law, Duke Franz of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. The two letters thus stand for Bogislaw and Franz.
