In the 16<sup>th</sup> century this was changed into a laurel wreath and in 1812 to the typical hat used by the Kurfürst of the Pfalz (Prince-Elect of the Palatinate). In 1819 the eagle was no longer crowned, and was facing left. Later in the 19<sup>th</sup> century a letter E was shown on the breast and the eagle was again facing right.
