History: 3 Search Attack Squadron (Heavy) (constituted 3 Sea–Search Attack Squadron [Heavy] on 7 December 1942; activated on 10 December 1942; redesignated 3 Search Attack Squadron [Heavy] on 22 November 1943; disbanded on 10 April 1944; reconstituted on 19 September 1985) consolidated (19 September 1985) with the 163 Liaison Squadron (constituted on 11 May 1944; activated on 15 May 1944; inactivated on 27 January 1946; activated on 3 October 1946; inactivated on 1 April 1949) and the 963 Airborne Warning and Control Squadron (constituted 963 Airborne Early Warning and Control Squadron on 8 December 1954; activated on 8 March 1955; inactivated on 30 April 1976; redesignated 963 Airborne Warning and Control Squadron on 5 May 1976; activated on 1 July 1976). Redesignated 963 Airborne Air Control Squadron on 1 July 1994. Tested electronic equipment and trained crews for antisubmarine operations; antisubmarine patrols, 1943. Replacement training unit, June–October 1944. Combat in Western Pacific, 16 May–c. 1 July 1945. Long–range surveillance, 1955–1974. Rotated aircrews to Southeast Asia, c. 4 April 1965–17 May 1974. Combat support in Panama, 20 December 1989–24 January 1990, and Southwest Asia, 17 January–6 March 1991.
